The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine invites applications for board-certified/eligible emergency medicine physicians to join our thriving academic faculty group at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW). Clinical Environment
Our faculty deliver exceptional, patient-centered emergency care to a high-acuity and medically complex patient population as part of the integrated health system at UW Health. As a certified Level 1 Trauma and Burn Center, our flagship ED at University Hospital cared for nearly 70,000 adult and pediatric patients in 2024. University Hospital is one of just two academic medical centers in the state and has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as Wisconsin’s No. 1 hospital for 14 years in a row. A leading regional referral center located on UW–Madison’s west side of campus, this 505-bed Magnet-designated facility is known as one of the nation’s leading hospitals for patient care and teaching.
Our faculty staff a 20-bed community ED at East Madison Hospital that cared for 38,000 patients in 2024, as well as the 11-bed ED at Madison’s VA Hospital. In addition, our pediatric emergency medicine faculty care for more than 17,000 patients annually at our 11-bed pediatric ED at the American Family Children’s Hospital. Our flight physicians staff UW Health Med Flight, one of the few air medical services in the U.S. to fly with an attending physician on board, and are recognized worldwide as expert clinicians and educators in critical care transport and retrieval medicine.
In 2026, we will expand emergency departments at University Hospital and East Madison Hospital — an important milestone that reflects our growth and commitment to supporting patients and care teams.
Teaching & Service Responsibilities
All faculty have teaching responsibilities supporting resident and fellow trainees, as well as undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. Faculty also participate in myriad service and social emergency medicine activities in support of our clinical, scholarly, and advocacy missions. Distribution of effort will be determined in accordance with service needs, academic priorities, and the candidate's expertise and career goals.
Scholarly Activity
Faculty contribute to advancing emergency medicine through scholarly activity, including authoring research and educational publications, leading or collaborating on research studies, and disseminating knowledge through teaching and professional presentations. DEM offers robust research infrastructure, funding support, and opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.

About the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine
Since our founding in 2014, the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine has become a nationally recognized, top-tier academic department of emergency medicine. We strive to advance our specialty and to improve the health and well-being of our patients through leadership in clinical care, medical education, research, advocacy, and community engagement.
We deliver high-quality care to patients from the upper Midwest through state-of-the-art clinical facilities and services and robust clinical programs including critical care, ultrasound, and prehospital medicine. Position Requirements
Candidates must have completed an ACGME-approved Emergency Medicine residency, be ABEM certified or eligible, and meet requirements for and obtain a Wisconsin medical license and clinical privileges in emergency medicine at UW Health. The successful candidate must qualify for a full-time academic faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher in the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
